A dear family friend is in his mid 60s, and he has always wanted to finish a whole novel. He says he is at about a 3rd grade reading level. He never finished high school, and he has worked in lawn care his whole life. He wants to get into reading, but he would like some content he enjoys besides children books. The only thing he really watches on TV is Poker or Football. I think he’d like something thriller/crime.

What about the “I Survived” series or Magic Treehouse?
Diary of a Wimpy Kid or Dog Man may be good since they have lots of drawings as well.
Would he be open to an audiobook? Maybe he could follow along with a physical copy to become more comfortable.
Maybe an adult graphic novel? There are definitely some good ones out there.
Another option might be some poetry.
I would say James Patterson might be a place to start if he wants to go strictly adult level book reading.
