Movie portrayals of British in India are comical and simplistic. India pre-British was fragmented like Europe—diverse kingdoms, caste system, untouchability, regional variations. British conquered and ruled this mess.
Want books on:
– Daily life by class (Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra, untouchables): routines, marriages, education, society pre/during British. Regional differences too.
– How British conquered diverse India and ruled it.
– Passionate pro-British defense (countering my biases—I've heard the anti-colonial side).
I agree with most of the things made by my (anti-colonization) side, but I feel like I am missing a lot of context, so one book telling me the day in the life of a 18th/19th Century Indian and one books STRONGLY DEFENDING The British Raj would be very helpful.
