It's looking like my elderly Father is going to spend a bit of an extended period in hospital while being treated for various conditions.
I’d like to send him a little care package of books to keep his mind occupied as best as I can in the absence of not being able to visit him too often due to living 5 hours away.
I’m hoping for some recommendations based on the kind of stuff I know he’s read previously. He’s generally been into what I guess you would call commercial thrillers? Patricia Cornwell, Tess Gerritsen, Lee Childs, Dan Brown and John Grisham.
I’m sure there’s better, lesser known authors / series out there? I want to make sure I get him some proper page turners as I feel he won’t engage with anything that’s a slow burn or takes a while to get into as my impression is he’s pretty down and despondent because of the illness and time in hospital.
Outside the above authors I know he’s enjoyed Robert Harris when I recommended him, also the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series. Anything in a fantasy or sci fi setting I'm pretty sure he wouldn't like.
Thanks!

Hope he gets better soon!
I have enjoyed most of the Covert-One series “Thriller book series created by Robert Ludlum, featuring a top-secret U.S. agency of the same name that investigates conspiracies, corruption, and biological threats. After Ludlum’s death, the series has been continued by several authors.” Not crazy violent, not gorey, pretty good plots. Best read in order.
Stephen Hunter Bob Lee Swagger series,
Presumed Innocent – Scott Turow – my dad loves Grisham and Baldacci and loved this. Turow has a bunch of other books as well. Presumed Innocent was turned into an excellent series on Apple TV also.
Ken Follett — Eye of the Needle or Pillars of the Earth
A different tone but a funny engaging read — The 100 year old man who feel out a window and disappeared
