    I'm looking for a mystery novel, that's less about a hunt for a criminal, and more about a strange situation, and the search for answers, with or without supernatural/scifi elememets. I'll give some examples from other forms of media that I've enjoyed:

    TV Shows:
    * Dark
    * Twin Peaks
    * From
    * Severance

    Videogames:
    * Alan Wake 2
    * Control
    * Persona 4
    * Horizon Zero Dawn (to an extent)

    Audio Dramas:
    * The Magnus Protocol
    * 90 Degrees South

    1. Agatha Christie – And Then There Were None is the absolutely perfect example of this genre.

    2. OHH I think you might enjoy The Man by Keiichiro Hirano, it’s such an unique take on the genre and a really interesting psychological deep dive into the narrating detective’s head drawing parallels between the investigation and his own struggles with his family and identity etcetera.

      It’s not the best book I have ever read but The Fury by Alex (wrote the silent patient) is pretty good. It’s not a whole dun it. It has a little bit of it but it’s not the main focus. it’s about how and why they got there and the relationship between the characters. The narrator is super unreliable. They lie A LOT. The story is not really in order either.

      I don’t know if this fits because I’ve never seen/played any of that.

      The End of Everything by Megan Abbott is a good one. A tween girl is kidnapped, and the “whodunnit” is figured out almost immediately, but there are a ton of other questions her best friend tries to find answers to. Despite being from the POV of a young girl, this book is definitely not for kids, and it is extremely uncomfortable to read.

      Tell The Wolves I’m Home by Carol Rifka Brunt is another good one. A teen girl’s favorite uncle dies, and now she’s in the position of trying to figure out why her family is being so weird about it. And how come she was so close with him but knew almost nothing about his life? He died of an illness – why are her parents acting like a crime was committed? Also from the POV of a kid but not for kids.[](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12875258-tell-the-wolves-i-m-home?ref=nav_sb_ss_1_15#CommunityReviews)

    5. Look into the “mystery box” trope. Two off the top of my head are Piranesi and The Maze Runner.
