I've read books such as "Little Fires Everywhere" and "The First to Die at the End," and while I did enjoy it I would like to read less "fictiony" books and try some more mature works. I really enjoyed "Blindness" by Jose Saramago and "Flowers for Algernon." I'd like to try some must-reads that carry a lot of meaning and thought. Maybe a little less on the story and more on the implications, if that makes sense? I'd like to read to spend my time wisely instead of reading to kill time. Sorry if I sound naive.

I read Siddhartha by Hesse around your age and it was absolutely life changing, especially if you have grown up in a religious household.
Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. A fiction book about a boy growing up in appelecia that explores themes of social classes and poverty, abuse, addiction, resilience.
Not naive at all!
Try Franny and Zooey by Salinger. Really, anything by Salinger. F&Z is smaller ball, so to speak, compared to The Catcher in the Rye but that’s a great one too.
All’s Quiet on the Western Front is brilliant.
Maugham’s Razor’s Edge is great.
I think these are all approachable for a 17yr old and in 10 or 20 years, you’ll re-read them and get a whole new sense of them.
