Looking for an ethereal, strange, existential novel

hey! it’s a friend’s birthday and i really want to get her a cool book. i was gonna buy the driver’s seat by muriel spark but it’s literally nowhere in bookstores near me, so i need a backup.

i’m looking for something with that ethereal + strange + slightly dark energy… like david lynch-ish (not horror necessarily, just uncanny / dreamlike / “something’s off”) and also dealing with interesting stuff like existentialism / identity / time / dread.

the mood i want is kind of like the film cléo from 5 to 7 (introspective, time moving, internal tension).

for reference, i love Dark Spring by Unica Zürn and The Lover by Marguerite Duras. i like a strong narrative voice, some darkness at play, and if it messes with time / structure even better.

pls give me recs that actually match this vibe 🙏 (and bonus if it’s not impossible to find lol)
