Here is a list of some of my favourite fictional characters.

    Rin – Poppy Wars

June – The Handmaids Tale (TV show specifically)

    Carol – The Walking Dead.

    Wendy – Ozark

    Arya/Danny – Game of Thrones.

    Annie – Attack on Titan

    Walter white – Breaking Bad

I really want a good book with an MC like these type of characters. It seems harder than it needs to be so I thought I’d ask Reddit. I don’t mind any genre as long as it’s not a horny book and preferably not a crime procedural type thing. Other than that I’m all ears. Thanks!

    1. You might enjoy The First Law series by Joe Abercrombie, a dark, gritty, funny, character-driven fantasy series. The first trilogy features mainly male protagonists, and I wouldn’t recommend skipping ahead, so it does take some time… but book 4, Best Served Cold, fits your request perfectly, and pretty much every book of the 10 book series going forward from there features a number of great, dark/morally grey female characters. It’s a fun series, and definitely worth starting at the beginning, with **The Blade Itself**. Abercrombie took criticism of the lack of female characters to heart after the first trilogy, and does an excellent job with them after that. It’s a series somewhat similar in tone to Game of Thrones or The Witcher, as opposed to something like LOTR. Endlessly quotable, featuring a cast of highly-flawed bastards you’ll come to love. Amazing audiobooks as well, if you’re into that, narrated by Steven Pacey.

Abercrombie’s latest novel, **The Devils** also features a great, mixed, cast of characters, some of whom fit your request, and it’s a standalone unrelated to The First Law, so you could always check that out to see if you enjoy his writing. It leans a bit heavier into the comedy side of things, but still has all the snarky dialogue, violence, and complex characters he’s known for.
