Are there any books like this out there?

Okay, so I just watched the Iron Lung movie, and I actually enjoyed it all the way through, up until the ending. Maybe I’m a basic loser with no comprehension and I want my hand to be held, but honestly I wanted more. Or at least something similar to feel this sad, little, achy feeling in my chest.

So, are there any books that have suspense and foreshadowing throughout the story, but don’t exactly give anything away until later on? Something well-versed in lore and mystery, but lets the reader radiate in the slow burn. Or maybe even a book that ends open ended, but has prequels or sequels that give more context? I love stories and movies and games with lore that can be thought about, but actually want some kind of answers.
