looking for a next great romance, or a book with a romantic main plot that isn't necessarily a romance novel (eg the hunger games). hoping for really excellent writing, not just good characters but like line by line great writing.
i dont care about the genders or orientation of the central characters, but i absolutely do not want any talk of pregnancy/wanting kids/honestly as little family as possible (unless the family is really fucked up like in the Boys of Tommen series), and also do not want any mention of characters being religious/praying/sin/etc.
would also prefer not comedies unless one has a VERY strong plot. i just prefer being devastated lol
romances ive read recently and my thoughts:
– boys of tommen series: great characters, but plots that are super melodramatic despite being addictive. terrible line by line writing imo
– the heated rivalry series: GREAT characters, inconsistent plots (loved role model, hated tough guy), super mid line by line writing
– the bride by julie garwood: DNR. hated the characters, plot, and writing
– pride and pleasure by sylvia day: DNR. liked the characters a lot, plot seemed interesting, but the writing was so obnoxious to me
– haunting of edgar love joy: same as pride and pleasure
– the rainbow rowell books: overall pretty good, but increasingly messier plots
things im open to:
– horror
– really fucked up stories (juniper and thorn eg)
– spec fic like sci fi and fantasy
– historical fiction that doesn't sound like its trying too hard (pride and pleasure eg)
– series
happy to clarify anything. i know this is mad specific so i would prefer no comment versus something like "good luck this is too specific." i know lol im just holding out hope
