Hi! I’m a middle school/high school teacher in a small, rural school. One of my grade 9 students is on the Autism spectrum and he really •really• doesn’t like fiction. Our class is doing an independent novel study to work on some analytical skills and writing, but he’s struggling to find a book.
I don’t want to force him to read a novel that he’s not interested in, and am willing to bend the parameters of the project to allow for him to find something he’ll enjoy.
He said he’s willing to try non fiction, maybe a biography. He has a particular interest in math. He’s open to a graphic novel but doesn’t like any of the ones that I have on my shelf.
I will purchase a book specifically for him, but am struggling to come up with a title that seems like a winner. Please make some suggestions! Thanks! 😊

How about a biography of Alan Turing? He’s the guy who cracked the Enigma, they even made a movie about him. Turing was never formally diagnosed, but many sources say he showed all the markers of Asperger’s syndrome, so he’d be relatable.
The Age of Wonder by Richard Holmes – about discoverers and inventors
Significant Figures by Ian Stewart – mini-biographies of famous mathematicians
