I am going through a very hard time in my life right now and I am in need of a pressure release – a nice solid cry.
I find books a bit harder to find than films.
I am a fan of sci-fi and fantasy. I like moving characters who deal with a lot of things that are hard for anyone to handle.
My favorite is the Herald Mage Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey as it hits a lot of the spots that I identify with. I also enjoy the Brain/Brawn books by Anne McCaffrey as they do deal with difficult issues. I am not opposed to trying a new genre or different authors in these genres. Just looking for something new that will help me deal with each day better than I am right now.
Does anyone have any ideas on what could be something to help trigger my crying fit and let off some pressure just so I can approach my life issues with a bit more clarity instead of negative feelings?
Thank you in advance.

John Green writes a lot of tearjerkers like, The Fault in Our Stars.
I’m usually a scifi/fantasy fan but nothing made me cry more than Crying in H-Mart, a memoir.
Wally Lamb is a good one for emotional reading. I just finished h{{The River is Waiting}}. h{{She’s Come Undone}} and h{{The Hour I First Believed}} are my favorites of his.
Blood Over Bright Haven punched me in the gut from the first page. Sword of Kaigen too but it’s not as immediate and a bit of a longer read
Before the coffee gets cold by toshikazu kawaguchi
Where the Red Fern Grows.
A Monster Calls absolutely destroyed me. I was freshly postpartum, which I’m sure contributed.
Bastard Out of Carolina – Dorothy Allison
A Thousand Splendid Suns
The Kite Runner
One Thousand White Women
Old Yeller
Moreta, one of the Pern books by Anne McCaffrey. Never fails to make me cry…
The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearn by Brian Moore
The Guncle. It sounds and looks on the cover like a silly light book, but it’s a GOOD, CATHARTIC cry fest. It’s about a man taking emergency custody of his niece and nephew after their mom, his best friend, dies of cancer and their dad, his brother, goes to rehab because his wife dying made him relapse, and the man already has been shut away from the world for years after he lost his partner to avoid grieving.
It’s a book you will come out on the other side feeling cleansed by the tears.
I use the Tiffany Aching sub series from Discworld for this – I think of it as a kind of human kintsugi.
They break me down and put me back together again, there is beauty in the cracks and the fixes.
The only book that has ever been close to making me cry was “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak, and it’s also a really good book
I’ll go with The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton
It’s a magical realism inter generational story about a young girl born with wings.
I’m going to recommend two **Legends & Lattes** by *Travis Baldree* and **The Utterly Uninteresting and Unadventurous Tales of Fred, the Vampire Accountant** by *Drew Hayes*
Neither will make you cry in the way you requested, but would classify them as “cozy fantasy” intended to make you feel better.
You may cry tears of happiness
I am not much of a sci-fi or fantasy reader, so take my recommendations with a grain of salt. These are my recent-ish reads that I’ve had a really strong emotional reaction to – most of them are very sad or intense but ultimately hopeful (which makes the experience more emotional, IMO!):
– *Shark Heart: A Love Story* by Emily Habeck
– *Martyr!* by Kaveh Akbar
– *Beautyland* by Helene Marie-Bertino
– *City of Thieves* by David Benioff
– *All My Puny Sorrows* by Miriam Toews
Can’t believe noone’s mentioned Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck yet.
The Farseer Trilogy, by Robin Hobb
