Looking for books that are deep and interesting but not hard to read. I'm thinking stuff like Perfume by Patrick Suskind, Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanthi, The Secret History by Donna Tartt, Mystic River by Denis Lehane. I really enjoyed all these books and I think about them regularly, but I didn't find them slow or difficult to get through like some of my other favorites: The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, Beloved by Toni Morrison, the Southern Reach series by Jeff Vandermeer, anything by Cormac McCarthy.

Anyone have any recommendations for things like this? I am reading Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse and White Noise by Don Delillo right now but neither of those compel me more than scrolling on my phone when I'm tired at night..
