I'm looking for suggestions for fantasy/romance books for a book club at our work that meets the following:
– work appropriate (some swearing and implied spice are okay, but nothing explicit)
– 500ish pages or less
– standalone book (or one that is part of a series but can be read as a standalone)
thank you!

honestly the ten thousand doors of january by alix harrow is perfect for this – it’s got that portal fantasy vibe with just enough romance to keep it interesting but nothing that’ll make things awkward during lunch discussions. sits right around 380 pages so you won’t be drowning in it either
if you want something a bit more traditional fantasy, the priory of the orange tree works too even though it’s chunky at 800+ pages, but it reads fast and the romance subplot is pretty tame. though maybe stick with the harrow book since you specifically mentioned the page count thing
both have great worldbuilding without being too dense for casual readers which is clutch for work book clubs where people might not be hardcore fantasy fans
