I might suggest *The Guns of August* by Tuchman. Professional historians frequently slam the book (e.g., “it is NOT history, it is gossip”) but it’s quite an enjoyable read.

“River of Doubt” by Candice Millard. A well researched and writtennaccount of Theodore Roosevelt’s team exploring a previously unexplored stretch of the Amazon In 1912. A dangerous, wild adventure. After reading the book I almost felt like I had been on the trip. A harrowing tale.
