Hello everyone!
I'm in the process of creating a query letter for a book I've recently finished writing. As part of it, I want to have comparisons to similar books. However, I haven't quite come across something which matches the energy of my story, which I guess is why I wrote it.
On the spy end of things, I'm looking for a book that takes place preferably in the 1970s, with strong ties to the Cold War and East-West geopolitics and intelligence operations. I don't want it to be a hard core "realistic" story like Le Carre's books but also not quite as superhero-esque as Bond. Also, not a military thriller like Clancy.
As for the chess side, I haven't ever come across a proper chess drama/thriller or any stories that have to do with competitive chess. On this front, I'd be looking for something with a focus on chess and the players, rather than having chess be a minor plot point.
If you've got anything, let me know!

have you checked out “the queen’s gambit” by walter tevis – hits that chess drama angle perfectly and the cold war backdrop is solid without being too heavy handed
