For those of you who grew up in the United States, I’m curious what books (especially, but not limited to, novels) were fundamental/impactful to your education and upbringing. What books would you recommend to a well-educated, avid reader who did not experience K-12 in the States, and thus missed out on all the classics, but wants to fill gaps in their reading résumé? Thank you in advance!

Part of US culture is rugged individualism, determination, and grit. Here are a few I red before entering grade 9.
Hatchet by Gary Paulson
The Giver by Lois Lowry
My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George
Flowers for Algernon
Winter of Our Discontent- John Steinbeck
Old Man and The Sea – Ernest Hemingway
