I'm coming towards the end of Babbel by RF Kuang, and I developed quite the bug for historical fantasy. I'm specifically looking for books that engage with the historical narrative (eg: Johnathan Strange & Mr Norrell), and don't just use it as a flavouring.

Any time period, or part of the world is fine. Frankly — the weirder, the better!

    1. **You’re looking for the works of Tim Powers**. He writes meticulously researched “secret histories” where his fantasy narrative explains and accounts for historical events.

***The Anubis Gates*** is my default recommendation. However, if you’re into pirates or sailing novels, start with ***On Stranger Tides****.* If you’re into spy novels (especially those of John Le Carré), then ***Declare***. If you’re into Gothic and/or Romantic literature then, ***The Stress of Her Regard****.*
