Feels like every fantasy/adventure story I hear about is centered around a 20-something protagonist who's exceptionally talented and/or once-in-an-age in their high-stakes dystopian situation. Often still good, but I started thinking about how something different would work. For example – I'm almost done with the Fourth Wing series, and finding the situation where a centuries-old dragons bond to teenage humans tedious and difficult to believe. I also read the ACOTAR series, and similar dynamic exists with the centuries-old male lead falling in love with the teenage human.
Are there any adventure/fantasy stories that feature like ancient partnerships or friendships that go waaaaay back? I like the elements of magic and high-fantasy creatures and such. Romance is welcome but not a necessity.
