Hello! I think the gold standard for the type of book I am looking for is Piranesi which is basically fully abstract, and liminal. Or maybe Einstein's Dreams. I just finished The Master and Margarita which did the trick, and G\*d Om*ns* kind of falls into the same bin, but both of those are slightly too grounded in reality… staying in the world of "magical realism" is fun, but we must go deeper.
I believe Life of Pi has been recommended to me before in this sort of ask, but I am wondering if that may be too philisophical whereas I am in it for the whimsy (let me know if you disagree). Jitterbug Perfume is perfect. The Alchemist also works.
I hope you can help me in this search for what I think are the coolest books out there!

Homeward Bounders by Diana Wynne Jones
I loved Piranesi – one of my favourite books. Another that I loved along those lines is A Short Stay in Hell by Stephen L Peck.
