Books that predate Roadside Picnic but explore the same trope?

I'm curious if there are earlier examples of the "mysterious zone corrupted by alien technology explored by people in search of catharsis" or if the Strugaskys were the the first. I suppose the whole thing is in some sense an evolution of faerie narratives but I'm specifically interested in the technological overlay so actual versions of faerie mythology wouldn't work.
