I’m looking for book recommendations that carry the same heavy, disturbing atmosphere as the movies „Eden Lake“ and „The Forest“ — mixed with the very real dread of disappearance cases like Kris Kremers & Lisanne Froon.
So basically:
• Wilderness / forest settings
• Survival horror or psychological horror
• “Humans are the real threat” OR being lost in nature
• Bleak, hopeless, deeply unsettling tone
• Realistic over supernatural (but if it’s subtle, that’s okay)
I’m chasing that specific feeling of isolation, being somewhere beautiful but deeply wrong… where help is far away and things slowly spiral out of control.
Stories about getting lost, hunted, stranded, or disappearing in the woods are especially welcome.
– i can read both English and German books, so recommendations in either language are possible
I also want to add that I have huge respect for Kris Kremers & Lisanne Froon and for what they (and their families) went through!!
I’m currently looking deeper into the case, and while I do find it incredibly interesting from a psychological and investigative perspective, it’s equally shocking and heartbreaking.
I mean no disrespect by mentioning it here, it’s simply that the atmosphere of the case reflects the kind of realism and wilderness dread I’m looking for in book recommendations.
