I’m looking for a book that has a city perspective , written by a woman with some teeth.
By teeth, i mean cutting pov. Nothing too concerned with formality or friendliness. I’d like a real story about real people. Preferably ones that live in an urban setting. Thanks in advance !
I liked *The Last Boat Out of Shanghai* by Helen Zia. It’s a non-fiction account of Shanghai during Japanese occupation in WWII and post-war Nationalist and Communist regimes. It pulls no punches and doesn’t advocate for any one particular regime (spoiler: they were all bad) and it makes Old Shanghai come alive.

Vernon Subutex by Virginie Despentes is brilliant and fits this perfectly.
