Every single thriller I read is the most surface level and simple prose, plot, and experience. I’ve tried and disliked Pretty Girls, Then She Was Gone, The Silent Patient, a bunch of Freida McFadden (just because she’s on Kindle Unlimited), and Rock Paper Scissors (this particularly offended me with its “tell not show” approach, random platitudes on every page, and comma splices everywhere.)
Girl on the Train was fine, and I actually liked Gone Girl if I remember correctly. Please save me. I want to read a good thriller so bad. I've heard Gillian Flynn's other books are good but I'm not sure which.

all of gillian flynn’s books are great.
maybe start with dark places. gone girl. then sharp objects. or maybe start with sharp objects if you’re really hankering after something good.
pretty girls/silent patient were passable.
McFaddy the baddy is really bad
Loreth Ann White is this for me. Smart and propulsive. She also loves women and writes them with respect unlike an AI wig wearing author who must not be named.
Older but have you ever read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series? I loved that series. I guess I’m not sure if that counts as a murder mystery or a thriller but I found it thrilling.

I love well-written literary thrillers. Tana French is where I would start. I also loved Laura Lippman’s Dream Girl. And an Irish book about covid called 59 Days?
