For thrillers and mysteries I have read and enjoyed John Grisham‘s Jake Brigance series, Karen Slaughters Grant County series, a lot of Tami Hoag, William Kent Krueger.
As for historical fiction I have enjoyed Gone with the Wind (favorite book), Lonesome Dove (also my favorite), The Kitchen House, Before We Were Yours, Kristian Hannah books, Wiley Cash
I love a southern setting for either genre, but it’s not a must.
I DO NOT want anything where the author takes political jabs at either party. If it’s fictitious local politics that’s fine, I just don’t want to hear someone take their frustrations out on this party or that party, I hear enough of that in real life.
What suggestions do y’all have?

The God of the Woods by Liz Moore
The Poison Artist by Jonathan Moore
The Alienist by Carr (and follow-on) will give you mystery/thriller & historical fiction. NYC and New England in turn of the 19th century. Teddy Roosevelt is innit but it’s not political at all.
Stephen Hunter writes thrillers that mostly take place in the rural south. No political stuff. Stories center around former Marine sniper trying to adjust back to civilian life. Lots of guns.
