Perhaps [Beautiful Shining People](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beautiful_Shining_People) by Michael Grothaus? Excellent and poignant character-driven story. And while it’s near-future speculative fiction, it’s firmly rooted in the real world and deals heavily with the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. It’s outstanding.
