I expected it would be, coming from Sagan. It's just, the man writes like it's a column for newspaper. There's no descriptions at all of basically anything visual, which is strange. It's like the entire novel exists in narrating dialogue or explaining ideas. But the characters are just kind of there to present the ideas. I'm not exactly enjoying it, but mainly wanted to read it because I want to watch the movie and prefer to read the books first. I'm not even sure if there's movie adaptation follows the book. Fwiw I adore Sagans non fiction so I give him credit there.
