Looking for a gateway book

I’m after a book with the following:

– some sort of fugitive element (including prison escapes, or a lord of the rings sort of vibe where the characters are remaining undetected)

– ideally simply written – not, essentially, what I would consider to contain tonnes of unnecessary complex descriptions for a simple thing.

– ideally fiction, but I do like non fiction too
