I went to the touring production of the stage musical *Les Misérables* a few days ago, and it hit me that (having also read the book) very few books I have read have matched the impact or depth of that one. *East of Eden* by Steinbeck was the only one I could think of that has those similar qualities.
Are there other novels out there that are as broad and deep as these two?
