what are your favorite science fiction and fantasy novels that are *not* part of a series?
I like a good long series, but sometimes I also just like to see a good premise and characters explored over a single book. Especially when I've only been reading long series lately.
I need a break from 12 and 8 and 20 book epics. I want the best of the best (and your personal favorites) on self contained, one off storytelling.
thanks!

There are sequels, but Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky is a great, epic sci-fi/fantasy novel that can totally be read as a standalone.
The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins is a fun, wild ride of an urban fantasy/horror-ish novel that’ll keep you engaged and saying wtf the whole way through.
Clive Barker writes some great, unique, dark fantasy standalones. Check out Imajica or Weaveworld.
