I'd like to write a book and already have a good idea on what to write. I believe it's a great story and will share it once I've made it.
However I will admit even though I like reading I haven't read that many books. I'd like you all to suggest some books so that I can learn how characters are developed, plotlines are set up or pacing is set. I don't plan to study it but rather read enough to get a feel for it. After a few drafts I'll work on the rest of it but I'd like the experience to start first.

Obvious pick, but I think The Great Gatsby is the best “masterclass” book you can read. Short, relatively simple, elegant, one of the best books ever written. Study it and you’ll learn just about everything you ever need to know to write for any genre.
Alternatively: Gone Girl for a very elegantly structured modern thriller, or The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter for world-class meat-and-potatoes character work.
