Hi! My book club is looking for a good memoir. The book club is made up of all women in our 20’s or early 30’s. Most of us are married with kids. We typically read light romances. Think Emily Henry and Abby Jimenez. We’re looking to switch it up for the next book and try a memoir. Something with a bit more depth and content to discuss than our usual. Nothing too heavy or crazy long, but something with some interesting topics to spark discussion. Any ideas?

It sounds crazy but I absolutely loved Mariah Carey’s The Meaning of Mariah. Well done and her life is really interesting
Another that could work is Hello Molly by Molly Shannon which is overall extremely funny but starts with a tragedy
This is a bit different than success story suggestions you might get but try Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner. Deals with Immigrant identity in US, dealing with grief using food as a central theme to describe this incredible series of events in her life.
Oh, she is a member of a band called Japanese Breakfast. Lovely songs too.
Depending on how potentially politically spicy your group is interested in getting, *Careless People* by Sarah Wynn-Williams is a memoir specifically about her time working at Facebook from it’s early days (~2007) through when things took….a bit of a turn in the mid-2010’s. It’s a fast, wild read but can see it being hit or miss for a book club depending on the vibe of the group.
I’m glad my mom died by Jennette McCurdy is excellent. Especially on audio.
some of my favorite memoirs are:
– Frog by Sally Gould, a paramedic;
– Finding Me by Viola Davis, quite a heavy read;
– Burnt by Clare Frank about a California female fire fighter;
– Turning Pages by John Sargent, life of a publisher;
– Working Stiff by Jude Melinek about a medical examiner,
any book by Mary Roach, she is amazing
The Sacred Willow – Duong Van Mai Elliot
My book club read Hollywood Park by Mikel Jollett. He’s the singer for Airborn Toxic Event but even without knowing his band he has a fascinating life. He was born into the Synanon cult and thats sort of the easy bit.
Not a memoir but Nightbitch was a wild ride into maternal rage, loneliness, and the joy of motherhood.
If they’re cool Chronicles by Bob Dylan if not Boys in the Trees by Carly Simon. Both are great
I just started Strangers A Memoir of a Marriage by Belle Burden and I’m riveted!
