Hi! I’m trying to find a novel as a gift for a close friend who reads a lot, so I’m hoping for recommendations that are great but not super obvious.
Some things he loves / has enjoyed:
- Ursula K. Le Guin
- Knut Hamsun (Hunger, The Growth of the Soil)
- Nassim Nicholas Taleb (The Black Swan)
- Paper Towns by John Green
- He also reads idea-heavy nonfiction like The Coming Wave
In general he likes:
- Strong language and voice
- Psychological or human depth
- Smart or “meta” books about people, society, or how meaning is made
- Fiction that’s thoughtful or structurally interesting, not just plot-driven genre
He’s read a ton of classics and well-known books already, so I’m trying to avoid the most obvious picks.
I’m looking for:
- A novel or non fiction
- Something distinctive, well-written, maybe a bit unusual
- Ideally something a well-read person might still have missed
Any suggestions? Bonus points for books you love that don’t get recommended in every thread.
