I’m realizing more and more how critical stylish writing is to my enjoyment of books. A distinct voice, a light touch, dry humor and playfulness all comprise what I mean when I say style.
My other criteria is a sense of wonder: authors who uncover the mundane to reveal the marvels of existence.
For reference, some of my favorite authors within this scope are Calvino, Borges, Proust, Saramago and
Bonus points for any written in English, as I am more and more convinced that writers in my native tongue just can’t hang with Latin American and European authors in this category.
Also, I’ve read lots of Murakami and am kind of over him.
