!Spoilers for Joe Abercrombie's First Law and Age of Madness trilogies below!
Recently I've read Joe Abercrombie's First Law trilogy and I am starting the first book from the Age of Madness trilogy, however ever since finishing the First Law books I've been wanting to read something that is wholly set in a similar setting to the north in the First Law.
I absolutely loved the part with Logen struggling to survive in the harsh wilderness after being mistaken to be dead by his companions and in the first first Age of Madness book the part where Rikke and Isern were being pursued and they had to traverse the wilderness in order to flee to safety.
I'd like to read a grimdark fantasy book or a series of books that is set in a similar setting of harsh nordic wilderness, where the main character is a person attempting to survive against all odds, beaten down, wounded and freezing in the cold and yet still pushing on.
A huge bonus for the book/series of books would be if the main plot was more or less connected to revenge, politics, magic or betrayal also I'd like for the characters' choices to actually feel like they will kill or severely hurt them if they miscalculate, make a mistake or simply are very unlucky.
As for the early medieval setting I am looking for a nordic setting where civilisation is scarce, there are few major cities, most people live in small villages or towns scattered across vast and dangerous wilderness, folklore is very much alive and people fear/believe in spirits, ghosts etc. Most of the land is to a big extent lawless and ruled by minor local warlords and the different tribes often are at war with each other.
Thanks in advance for recommendations! I know this might be quite a specific request but maybe there are some books that fit these criteria and I'd absolutely love to read them.
