Per Rule 1, I am writing this to discuss my thoughts on finishing up “I’m Glad My Mom Died” by Jenette McCurdy. I am writing it to engage in civil discussion about the book, and I am not under any circumstances making a recommendation request.
With that out of the way, I finished the book last night/early this morning. There is just so much to unpack. For starters, Jenette is an excellent writer, and I enjoyed how accessible the writing was. Next, she did a great job with her almost journalistic style. Not as in journalism, but more how you would think a diary entry would be written.
I have never liked the way Hollywood treats kids, and I was always saddened to hear all the accusations and stories come out about the adults whose job it was to protect the child actors and actresses. I can’t imagine what it would feel like to have every second of your most formative years televised. I don’t know any decent parent that would be okay with their kids acting.
I know there are plenty of actors and actresses that have escaped the worst (going down a Britney Spears route). But still, the amount of crap and just….sexual assault and general creepiness these poor kids have to deal with is heartbreaking. What makes it worse is how involved the parents are in the abuse.
Jenette’s story was terrible, and I am so sorry she went through it. I am so happy that she is actively in recovery and making the most of the world and her life. I am currently reading Reza Aslan’s “Zealot” but after that, I will definitely read her other book. I will also be reading every other book she puts out.

I really enjoyed her book because I listened on audible and it was almost like…. Trauma dumping with a friend. I’d be listening and find myself nodding along or thinking “ so relatable”. I found her to be a very honest author.
Her writing voice is incredible, and her recovery is impressive to say the least after all she’s been through. Excited to see what else she puts out in the coming years
