I posted this on r/suggestmeabook, so copying what I wrote there.
This is going to be long. Long story short I’ve been reading books on and off since about 2020-2021. Usually about 10 or so a year, with 2023 being my peak at about 30 give or take.
Since then I’ve floundered, not reading much, reading 10 in 2024 and even less in 2025. In late 2025 is where I got back into it, and since October I’ve read half a dozen or so books. At this point I’m kind of stuck as I’m running out of books to read (I bought a bunch of books in 2023 during my hot streak and it’s taken me a while to get through them). I want stuff that I’m likely to enjoy, so here are a few requirements:
I don’t want something too long, as starting the Stand by Stephen King is what ended my hot streak of getting through a couple books a month. Max 600-700 pages.
I don’t want something with a lot of sex, I’m not a prude, I don’t want that in my books.
I’m not looking for a specific genre, I want a variety. I want to feel something and I want great characters; I’ll gladly read something that’s not all that great if the characters are well written.
Here are some books (a lot) that I’ve enjoyed
The Road by Cormac McCarthy
The Stand by Stephen King
Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson
A Study in Scarlet and other Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
1984 by George Orwell
Everyone in my Family Has Killed Someone
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
One small requirement is no Stephen King recommendations, as I’m trying to work through his work in release order, and I can’t find a copy of The Dead Zone at my closest book store.
I’d also like some historical fiction recommendations as I love history and want to learn more especially if it’s in a different non-western culture. I wouldn’t mind if it was a story with a historical backdrop but in a different genre (ie fantasy or mystery).
