I’m a former bookseller and avid reader, so there’s a lot of more popular titles that I’ve already read. Let’s go as niche as possible!
I’m a big fan of the works of Jeanette Winterson, Alice Walker, Evelyn Waugh, Mary Renault, Joyce Carol Oates, Patricia Highsmith, Dorothy Strachey, Nella Larsen, Donna Tartt, and Christine Coulson.
I love things with historical or academic settings, too. If there’s poetic, lyric, or surreal elements, that’s even better!
Any ideas?

It’s a poetry collection (by a young writer), but figured I’d still include it. I loved it.
I’m not sure how niche these all are, but here are some I’ve enjoyed:
– Vagabonds! by Eloghosa Osunde (surrealism/magical realism)
– Jam on the Vine by LaShonda Katrice Barnett (historical)
– The Thirty Names of Night by Zeyn Joukhadar (dual timeline historical/contemporary)
– Palaver by Bryan Washington
– Minor Black Figures by Brandon Taylor
– La Bastarda by Trifonia Melibea Obono
I just read On Earth We’re Briefly Georgeous by Ocean Vuong and it was a friggin masterpiece.
