Hi! as the title suggests, I'm looking for some intriguing or scary investigation/journalist stories, fiction or non-fiction, horror elements are a great addition too. all recommendations welcome, but I'd prefer to avoid Young adult novels.

Try James Lee Burke. These are fiction and great detective stories set in Louisiana. Burke has written several of them and they’re all good.
