I don't intentionally read 4 or 5 star books exclusively but everything that gets recommended and most of the stuff I find is publicly praised or almost 5 star. I almost always disagree whether it's due to a personal preference on writing style or plot, or some plot hole that I cannot look past, or pacing issue or lack of development/time for a certain character or event. I can't name any books off the top of my head however a lot of books that have changed my life or intrigued me from start to finish were books that ended up being 2 or 3 star or not having much online interest. There have been a couple that I agreed were terrible but I still enjoyed and I'm looking for anything that's not popular to give it a try.
By not popular, I don't mean controversial or avoided. Just the fan base is small with this one.

The Orange Eats Creep by Grace Krilanovich (3 stars on goodreads)
it’s written as stream of consciousness, and it’s crass and strange and doesn’t even really follow a logical time structure. idk I enjoyed how different it was and still think about it
