I’m not much of a reader at all, but would like to start. I find it difficult to finish books I don’t like. I’ve started a few that I saw from TikTok and only finished one lol. So I’m hoping coming here will help me out. 🙂 I’ll just list a few books I have read and whether I enjoyed them or not.
East of Eden: favorite book I’ve read so far. I have never had a story captivate me the way this one did and I fear I’ll never find it again haha. It really changed my life.
A Court of Thorns and Roses: I really wanted to love this series and be a part of the fandom but I couldn’t get through the first book. Didn’t like the writing, characters, storyline, and I do NOT enjoy smut or lots of descriptive sex in books
The Fourth Wing: also couldn’t finish the book. I got maybe like a quarter of the way through.
The Woman in Cabin 10: another one from TikTok I saw. I did finish this one, but it was poorly written and hard to get through.
The Old Man and the Sea: difficult for me to get through but still enjoyed the slow pace and the story itself.
Any book by Kristin Hannah: LOVE, I always end up sobbing. I’ve read Firefly Lane, The Great Alone, and Magic Hour so far. Love her character writing
Harry Potter series: obviously love. How could one not
This Perfect Day: found on my dad’s shelf and actually loved it.
The Hunger Games Trilogy: love of course

If you like hunger games check out Red Rising
If you liked East of Eden, I’d pick up other Steinbecks! Grapes of Wrath maybe
It seems like you might like litfic more than something very genre (like the thrillers or the romantasies that didn’t do it for you). Maybe something like The Emperor of Gladness, The God of the Woods, or Flashlight.
I dont recommend following tiktok or even goodreads recs because they’re mostly repetitive and are actually ads.
It looks like you prefer lit/general fiction:
Try these:
A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
The Talented Mr. Ripley – Patricia Highsmith
Station Eleven – Emily St. John Mandel
Never Let Me Go — Kazuo Ishiguro
Parable of the Sower — Octavia E. Butler
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet — Becky Chambers
If you want to try romance, you can go for Emily Henry books. You can try Beach Read, Happy Place or Book Lovers.
I think the only 2 recs on tiktok I enjoyed:
The Song of Achilles — Madeline Miller
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black if you want to give faes another try and like politics, it’s YA so no smut. I did read them in 2018 before tiktok though.
Get the libby app and connect to a library.
Here are two series that do magic on a different track than Harry Potter: The Rivers of London (Aaronovitch) and The Founders Trilogy (Bennett).
If you are recommended The Magicians (Grossman), I think they will be too spicy for your preferences.
