if you are looking for that exact reluctant protector vibe you really need to read between two fires by christopher buehlman. its set during the black plague so it gets super dark which fits perfectly since you liked resident evil. the whole story is about this disgraced knight who gets stuck with an orphan girl and their father daughter dynamic carries the entire book. watching him go from not wanting the kid to being willing to burn the world down for her is just top tier. definitely read it if you want that emotional gut punch.
