I'm drawn to books where the protagonist goes through some sort of trial and/or training, often in some sort of education system or tournament. They start out green and make it through on cleverness, grit, and wanting it more than everyone else, eventually becoming a master at whatever it is they're doing. Most of the time it's some sort of combat that drives the trials/training, but sometimes it's about becoming competent at something less violent.
Trials and training books I liked:
- Red Rising by Pierce Brown
- Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
- Brandon Sanderson's whole catalog (Mistborn, Stormlight, etc.)
- Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
- Dune by Frank Herbert
- Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
- Sarah J. Maas' whole catalog (ACOTAR, Throne of Glass, etc.)
- The Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter
- Blood and Steel by Helen Scheuerer
- Quicksilver by Callie Hart
- Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb
- Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
- Blood Song by Anthony Ryan
- An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
- The Poppy War and Babel by R.F. Kuang
- Spark of the Everflame by Penn Cole
- The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent
Other similar books/series that didn't quite hit the mark for what I'm looking for
- The Hunger Games
- Harry Potter
- Eragon
- The Wheel of Time
- Shield of Sparrows
- Empire of the Vampire
- The Awakening
- Blood over Bright Haven
Thank you if you can give me more books like this!

The Will of the Many by James Islington. It’s the hierarchy series with book two, The Strength of the Few. The third book is due early next year.
I couldn’t put these books down. There is a Reddit sub for the series.
Robin McKinley’s The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown have elements of this.
Legendborn Cycle by Tracy Deonn
Scholomance series by Naomi Novik
The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake
