TLDR:
Looking for audiobook recommendations. I would appreciate suggestions for both twisty sci-fi with big themes, and also fun and clever mysteries.
Regardless, I want great characters in a gripping narrative with lots of twists.

WHOLE SPIEL:
Never been much of a reader but want to listen to audiobooks while I clean, drive, walk the dogs, etc. I’m having a really hard time finding something that really grabs me. What I’m looking for:
There are kinda two paths I’m interested in exploring:
1 – twisty sci-fi* with big themes
2 – fun and clever mysteries
*While I love sci-fi, I really struggle to get into space-themed sci-fi.
I’m always drawn to stories with lots of twists and mysteries. Open to both humor/levity and dark/cerebral tones. It just has to be engaging.
OTHER FICTION I LIKE:
Bioshock (video game): Love the whole premise of a secret underwater city that is basically a giant social/political experiment for unchecked capitalism that went terribly wrong.
Horizon: Zero Dawn (video game): Loved slowly discovering what’s going on and how civilization collapsed in the past. Great existential threat and fun sci-fi solution requiring people to come together. Liked the themes around the good and bad of technology and perils of toxic tech bros.
Project Hail Mary: Really enjoyed the gradual discovery of what was going on, how the (excellent) characters react to extreme situations, and the tone. That said, usually not a fan of space sci-fi.
Veronica Mars / Poker Face / Hot Fuzz: Love the amazing characters and witty dialogue. The crimes and mysteries were a lot of fun. In each one, though the world is grounded (not sci-fi), the settings are realized and interesting.
