Hello all,
I am currently planning the summer reading program for my library. We make patrons read 10 books total in order to be eligible for a prize, and 2 of those must be chosen from our sets of summer reading books. In previous years, the books have been chosen by a local advisory board, but this year we are adding our own. I'm hoping to hit a few genres our current list doesn't cover, but don't want my (quite frankly strange) taste to lead to choices that don't work for a general audience. We also have a loose theme this year, which is "plant a seed, read" (plants, gardening, and growth). Our current list is as follows:
- American Breakdown by Jennifer Lunden
- The Great Transition by Nick Fuller Googins
- Grendel by John Gardner
- Night of the Living Rez by Morgan Talty
- The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
- A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole
- Moon in Full by Marpheen Chann
- Beneficence by Meredith Hall
- Lungfish by Meghan Gilliss
We are adding Hamnet to the collection, as we just ordered a set for a book club and it has been very popular. I was hoping to branch into sci-fi, fantasy, and graphic novels for the other books, since many of our patrons do not read those genres but often express an interest. I'd greatly appreciate any recommendations for these genres (or others) which may be appealing to an audience largely unfamiliar with them.
