So I have probably only read (and finished) 6 books in my life 😭. Im not the brightest and I wasn’t the best in ELA but I’ve always wanted to get interested in read but never knew where to start or what I even liked.

Abt me: I’m a 17yo Male. I’m still a senior in high school and like I said I’m not the brightest so I’m joining the marine corps right after high school. I’m very interested in controversy and I’m very Christian and conservative. You can assume the kind of person I am or things I like I don’t mind.

What I definitely don’t want: I know for sure I don’t want any romance or anything se*ual. I don’t want a book that’s too long either I feel like I might get task paralysis and procrastinate. Not really interested in memoir or autobiography

What I might like: I’m not really sure but I am very interested in serious and dark genres like horror, dystopian society, realism, and I’m really interested in psychology. Any book that’ll keep my mind occupied and questions my morality/ moral compass I will love.

If the book is a little above a beginners level or has some elements that I don’t like please still recommend it im not picky at all and I love a challenge. 🙏

You might like The Saturday Night Ghost Club by Craig Davidson. It’s kind of similar to Stephen King’s IT but more grounded in realism and WAY less sexual (I don’t recall there being any sexuality or romance? If there was it was very minimal). It’s also much shorter (194 pages vs. 1000+) so much more approachable. IT is one of my favourites, but I think this does a good job of taking the parts that I liked from IT and condensing it down while getting rid of a lot of the questionable stuff (like the sexuality, filler, convoluted supernatural worldbuilding, etc.) The similarity to Stephen King is mainly in how well the author writes the friends and their escapades. There is not a monster in this story in the same way as in IT. It is not a monster horror, it is more psychological/societal critique style horror.

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is a great short story about a woman who is forced into bed rest (this was a common ineffective treatment in the late 1800s) and she goes crazy because she’s locked in this room without any mental stimulation for weeks. It’s a horror short story about her descent into madness.

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. Rape is a key element of the society, but I don’t remember the descriptions being explicit.
