I have found that almost all of my favorite media seems to work almost with the character being plopped in point B and trying to work their way back to point A.
Stories like the lost colony or Roanoke, vaults in fallout, or even the story of the new game Marathon where you are in some location where a story already happened and are solving the mystery of how things ended up the way they are. This part of Project Hail Mary also hooked me with Ryland trying to figure out where he was and why he was even there in the first place.
