If you like fantasy but not crazy amounts of swords and sorcery, **The Gentlemen Bastards Sequence** by **Scott Lynch** might be worth looking into. Book 1 is titled **The Lies of Locke Lamora**.
I was so broken up at the end of the first book, it took me about 5 years before I was willing to read book 2 and 3.
Its about an orphan boy who is sold to a gang of con-men (and a con-women), and is trained to be the best con-artist in the city. All three of the books so far in the series are fantastic, but book 1 hit me hard at the end. There is no cliff hanger so if you don’t want to continue the story and learn more about the characters, you dont need to get book 2 or 3. But, if you get book 2, you will want to get book 3 for the resolution. Each book has a different caper/jobs the crew is working on with some fantastic twists. Its more suspense, thriller set in the middle ages than all out fantasy, but there is some magic and magical creatures to add to the mix.
