I read so much sci-fi that I feel like I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel lately, and many of the books I've read recently are just "some people (white guys) do stuff in space and there's probably a war". I'm looking for some suggestions for sci-fi where you actually care about the characters.

I've read most of the commonly recommended suggestions in this vein:

    • All of Becky Chambers
    • Dungeon Crawler Carl
    • Station Eleven
    • Project Hail Mary and the Martian
    • Most of the old classics

Can you think of any ideas? Something not set on a ship would be cool as well, because I'm in a space opera overload lately.

Most of Ursula K Le Guin’s books are fantastic sci-fis. Check her out

    2. The Final Architecture series by Adrian Tchaikovsky might be worth a look. It’s a bit like the Becky Chambers stuff, with lots of different characters that you get to know over the three books.

Matt Dinnaman’s new book – Project Bounce House – is really good.

It’s not part of the Dungeon Crawler world, but similar vibe.

Also check out Murderbot Diaries and just about anything by John Scalzi.

And the Silo series by Hugh Howey.

      And The Expanse.

(And the new series by James S A Corey, though there’s only one book published for that one so far.)

    5. um, i had recently read a sci-fi romance where 90% of the story was set on a space ship and during that time some of those on that ship get infected with some mystery virus (think COVID 19). a group of healers race to find an antidote. one of the healers falls in love with the guy on the ship who is supposed to kidnap her. the guy’s uncle is a strange man and there is a class systems where he lives. the story is full of politics and law and order situation.

everything goes haywire when his love for the healer clouds his thinking and his mission.

the story is divided into 3 parts and everything is nicely explained. does this sound good to you?
