I know the obvious answer would be the LOTR books, but I’ve actually heard mixed things about them and some believe the movies elevated the material more, so I’m unsure on them as of right now, however, if you’ve read them and believe them to be worth reading, let me know.
It doesn’t have to be fantasy, just something with interesting characters, good turn and unexpected events, and a great conclusion.
Could be a book or a series of books.

Check out In the Day of the Flood by Stephen Thomas, only recently released (I’m an advanced reader). It’s an epic exploring characters living 9000 years ago who are caught up in a world-altering apocalypse. Has a bit of a Tolkien vibe in how the characters develop and a created ancient language (called Meri, its beautiful).
