I just finished When Among Crows by Veronica Roth and loved it.
I would love to hear other recommendations for similarly dark, gothic-feeling fantasy books with a gay MC and M/M relationship as part of the plot. I've found a lot of LGBTQ books in the gothic/horror subgenres of fantasy have lesbian relationships which is awesome but not what I'm looking for.
Bonus points for any of the following: trans male MC, dark academia vibe, morally complex characters, toxic relationship, Victorian-era, tragedy, gore/violence . . . but obviously not required.
I really dislike pure romance but absolutely willing to hear anyone out. However please do not recommend gay erotica to me (as in those trashy airport stall books with buff men on the cover). I'm fine with sexual content I just don't think the writing quality of the aforementioned is very good.
Other queer fic authors I've liked: Poppy Z. Brite, Andrew Joseph White

I haven’t read the book you referenced, but Monstrilio by Gerardo Samano Cordova is a horror novel that has M/M, violence, gore, tragedy, toxic relationships, and morally complex characters.
All of Us Murderers by JK Charles is a queer gothic Edwardian novel and so much fun.
The Whyborne and Griffin series by Jordan L Hawk (Widdershins)
